Zur Person:
Von 1977 bis 1982 studierte Prof. Piepenbreier Elektrotechnik an der Universität Hannover. 1979 wurde er in die Studienstiftung des Deutschen Volkes aufgenommen. Nach dem Studium arbeitete Prof. Piepenbreier als wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter am Institut für Elektrische Maschinen und Antriebe der Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg. Dort wurde er 1986 promoviert. 1989 erhielt er den Literaturpreis der Energietechnischen Gesellschaft (ETG) im VDE.
1987 wechselte Prof. Piepenbreier in die Industrie zur SIEMENS AG in Erlangen. Dort war er in verschiedenen Funktionen in der Entwicklung für Elektrische Antriebe tätig. Der Schwerpunkt seiner Arbeit lag in der Entwicklung von Systemlösungen für Großantriebe und Elektrostraßenfahrzeuge.
Neben der Industrietätigkeit hatte Prof. Piepenbreier ab 1991 einen Lehrauftrag für „Geregelte Drehstromantriebe“ an der Universität der Bundeswehr Hamburg.
